The second Tom Cruise stepped out of his car at the Imax theatre in Wadala, slight grin in place, wearing his trademark Raybans, it felt like Top Gun all over again, except it was a red carpet that he walked on and not an airport runway.
The fact that he was supposed to arrive at 6pm sharp at the theatre for a “meet and greet” with his fans for whom he’d held a special screening of his film, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, but only arrived 45 minutes after the scheduled time, didn’t matter once he was there.
Loud screams rented the air as he did a walk-about, shaking hands and signing autographs for his waiting fans. Yes, his real Indian fans and not hired ones like at the airport yesterday.
The gathered crowd had watched the first screening of Cruise’s film, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol at the Imax theatre in 2D and 3D. Cruise was almost as keen to interact with them as they were to talk to him. They couldn’t believe their lucky stars–they had just watched the latest Mission Impossible film, before its release on 16 December worldwide, with none other than the star, Tom Cruise himself, wanting to know what they’d thought of the film.
Of course the screaming and excitement among the fans was natural as he charmed everyone and heard them out patiently.
Anil Kapoor and Paula Patton, who also star in the film, along with Cruise posed for the million cameras, but the cameras were focused specifically on Cruise. Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh and director duo, Abbas-Mustan too preened for the cameras to promote their next film, Players, alongside Cruise at the same gig. Cruise didn’t seem to mind at all, lending his celebrity to the cast and crew of Players.
Incidentally, it was Cruise who started the trend of meeting fans before a film premiere or any promotional event and giving it that personal touch where his fans could reach out to him and speak to him. It’s no wonder he reigns supreme as the biggest film star in the world, with his loyal legion of fans by his side. He departs for Dubai tonight, his next promotional stop for the film.
